Range Aoudad Sheep Hunting |
|
Aoudad
Sheep also known as Barbary Sheep were first introduced in 1948
to the desert mountains of West Texas and Southern New Mexico.
This new home was so much like their native arid Atlas Mountains
of North Africa that the animals flourished and are now considered
native game in Texas. |
Aoudad
Sheep are one of the most challenging sheep species to hunt anywhere
in the world.
They live in some of the roughest driest country imaginable.
Bluffs and ledges in steep walled canyons are their home. They are very
nomadic by nature and have the ability to obtain their water needs from
dew and dry vegetation. They do not rely on dependable water sources
to survive.
This has greatly expanded their territory and they now occupy
most mountainous
West Texas Counties from Del Rio to the Texas Panhandle
Our Aoudad Sheep Hunts take place in the Glass Mountains of West Texas South of
Fort Stockton on one of the largest ranches in Texas consisting of more than 300,000 acres.
This ranch is home to incredible amount of Free Roaming Aoudad, Desert Mule Deer,
Pronghorn Antelope, Elk and abundant other wildlife.
The elevation ranges from 3200 ft - 5200 ft and has perfect habitat for Aoudads with thousands of step walled canyons and draws for rams to reach mature age.
It is not uncommon to see more than 100 animals in one herd,
although 20 to 50 is most common.
Hunting techniques vary and there are times and circumstances that being in good physical condition will increase your success although its not imperative on this hunt.
We can accommodate hunters who are less physically fit,
or who have health or mobility problems.
The specially designed Dune Buggies called Mountain Buggies take us to the edge of remote canyons to glass for sheep.
These Mountain Buggies can virtually go anywhere we need to go and allows us to cover huge amounts of country that otherwise would take weeks or longer on foot.
