TECH TIPS: SAFETY
SWITCH
A safety switch simply works by opening
and closing circuits.
As long as pressure in the high side line (the line between
the condenser and evaporator) is within safe, operating levels,
the safety switch will keep the electrical circuit between the
thermostat and
the compressor closed.
However, when pressures either rise above or fall below safe
levels, the switch opens the circuit to shut down the system.
While a binary switch will simply shut down the compressor, the
trinary switch has an added feature. When pressures start to
rise, the trinary switch will engage an electric fan to bring
additional air across the condenser to lower high side pressure.
Both the trinary and binary safety switch can be mounted anywhere
in the high pressure line between the condenser and the evaporator.
Mounting the safety switch behind the dash near the evaporator
hides the switch out of view for
a clean underhood appearance.
